Private theatre vs cinema vs home setup: which is worth it?

Saturday, 7 PM. The multiplex has the film at 9:40, tickets plus popcorn for two already cost more than you hoped, and at home a work call is coming through the wall.

A private theatre is worth it when you want a big screen, your own choice of film and a room nobody else walks into, especially for a couple or a small group marking an occasion. A multiplex is better and cheaper for new releases, and a home setup wins if you watch several times a week and have the space and budget to build one. We run a private theatre in Koramangala, so we have put our own numbers in the table and labelled everything else approximate.

Private theatre

Our cheapest two-person room, CINEPOD, is Rs 1,097 per slot, about Rs 549 each. Recliner rooms run from Rs 1,597 in PHANTOM to Rs 2,997 in INFINITY, or about Rs 799 to Rs 1,499 each.

The group rooms, COMET (up to 6), FUTURA (up to 7) and COSMOS (up to 8), are priced by headcount: Rs 1,648 for two plus Rs 250 per extra guest. Children under 5 don't count towards the headcount.

Multiplex

A standard multiplex ticket in Bangalore usually costs a few hundred rupees, and recliner or premium-format seats can go well over Rs 1,000 (approximate). Popcorn and drinks can add Rs 300 to Rs 700 per person (approximate).

Home setup

A 55-inch 4K TV with a soundbar might cost Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000, and a projector with good speakers can pass Rs 1,50,000 (approximate). Spread over 100 movie nights, that is roughly Rs 500 to Rs 1,500 per night for the household before subscriptions, and each extra night brings the figure down.

What a private theatre evening looks like

You book a slot online and pay a small advance. Before leaving, upload your ID proof on our website; it's required, and if you skip it, reception checks your ID at the venue and uploads a photo for you. Pay the balance at the venue by cash, card or UPI, or pay it online beforehand from your phone, where your booking shows the remaining amount. Arrive about 15 minutes early, show the QR code and walk into your room. If someone is stuck in traffic, they can still check in any time within the booked three hours, though the slot ends on time.

Inside, every room has access to the major OTT platforms, so you pick anything on them. When you get hungry, scan the room's QR code, order from the menu, and the food comes to your theatre door. Alcohol is not allowed at Rosae. If the film overruns and the next slot is free, you can extend for a small extra charge of about Rs 200-300 depending on the room. Guests must be 18+, though children under 18 can come with an adult on a group booking.

Privacy, content and sound

A multiplex hall comes with phone screens, chatter and people walking past. Our rooms are booked only for your group, with no cameras inside the theatre rooms. Home gives you privacy too, although deliveries and work calls are harder to shut out.

A multiplex shows current releases at set times. With us you pick from the major OTT platforms, so an old favourite, a series finale or a regional film that never reached a local screen are all possible if they are streaming. To play your own video, such as a wedding film, tell the team first on +91 63617 29855 and they will set it up.

For sheer scale, a large multiplex screen in a premium format wins. A private theatre room sits between a cinema and a living room. Eight of our nine rooms have a 4K screen and Dolby sound, and CINEPOD has an HD screen with surround sound. At home, the result depends on your budget, the room, and how loud the neighbours let you be.

When a normal cinema is the better choice

• You want a film that is only in cinemas right now. Our rooms play what's on the OTT platforms, so films that are only in cinemas aren't available.
• You are going alone or on a whim, and one ticket costs less than a whole room.
• You want the biggest screen for a big-budget action film.
• You enjoy a packed hall cheering on opening night.
• Your group is larger than ten. COSMOS, our largest room, is listed for up to 8 guests, but it can fit up to 10. For groups above 8, call +91 63617 29855 before booking.

When a home setup or a private theatre makes more sense

A home setup pays off if you watch films or sport several times a week, have young kids who make going out hard, and have a room you can darken plus the budget up front.

A private theatre makes sense for an anniversary, a date night or a small get-together where the setting matters. Per head, it gets closer to multiplex prices as the group grows from six to eight.
