Things to do in Bangalore for couples: day plans and night plans

Saturday comes, you both want to go out, and twenty minutes later you're still scrolling because nobody wants to spend the day in traffic between three neighbourhoods. The easiest fix is to pick one area and build a day or a night around it. Below are four day plans, four night plans and some indoor ideas for monsoon weekends, each with the area and an approximate cost for two.

Day plans for couples

Old Bangalore morning

Start with breakfast at Mavalli Tiffin Rooms (MTR) on Lalbagh Road, which opened in 1924 and is still known for rava idli, dosa and filter coffee. Weekend queues build fast, so get there early. From there, a short auto ride takes you to Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace near Kalasipalya, an 18th-century wooden palace looked after by the Archaeological Survey of India. An hour is enough to see it.

Museums around Cubbon Park

The Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum on Kasturba Road has hands-on science galleries where you'll end up racing each other at the exhibits. Close by, Venkatappa Art Gallery reopened after a long renovation and now shows hundreds of paintings over two floors, with a new café. Walk through Cubbon Park to Church Street for lunch afterwards. It's a slower day, and most of it happens under a roof.

A wild day at Bannerghatta

Bannerghatta Biological Park has a zoo, a safari through the park and a butterfly park. The bus safari keeps costs down, and a jeep safari gives you a quieter ride. The park is closed on Tuesdays, and leaving early saves you the worst of Bannerghatta Road.

Rides and water slides at Wonderla

Wonderla is a large amusement park with dry rides and a water park, about an hour's drive from the city centre depending on traffic (approximate). Treat it as a full day and carry a change of clothes.

Night plans for couples

Bangalore's main nightlife areas stay busy until late. Keep to well-known places, book your ride from inside the venue and share the trip with a friend.

Church Street and MG Road

Have dinner at Church Street Social, a loud café-bar full of art installations, then walk a few minutes to The 13th Floor on MG Road for a drink on its rooftop. The 13th Floor has been open since the 1990s and only admits guests aged 21 and over. Most bars in the city close around midnight to 1 AM.

A show at the Bangalore International Centre

The Bangalore International Centre is a non-profit cultural space in Domlur that hosts classical music, dance, talks and film screenings. Some events are free and some are ticketed, so check its calendar. Indiranagar is close by for dinner.

A late private movie at Rosae

This is ours. We have nine private rooms, each booked only for your group, and every room has access to the major OTT platforms, so you can watch anything on them. There are no cameras inside the theatre rooms. Outside food isn't allowed, but you can bring a cake, and when you scan the QR code in your room our kitchen brings your order to the theatre door. Alcohol is not allowed at Rosae. The last slot runs from 10pm to 1am, so a late dinner doesn't cost you the film.

Dinner and a walk in Koramangala

Indoor and monsoon plans

Bangalore's rains usually run from about June to October, and an evening downpour can flood roads quickly, so on those days choose one indoor place and stay put. Phoenix Marketcity in Whitefield is one of the city's largest malls, with a big food court and a PVR multiplex, and it sits next to a metro station for when the roads jam; browsing is free, and a movie and a meal for two run about ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 (approximate). The Visvesvaraya museum and Venkatappa Art Gallery from day plan two are fully indoors. The Bangalore International Centre often has an afternoon talk or screening. Our 1-4pm and 4-7pm slots cost the same as the evening ones, which makes a rainy afternoon a good time for a film.

A weekend we'd plan for two

On Saturday, reach MTR by 8 am, before the queue gets long, and take an auto to Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace by 9:30. Head home through the hottest part of the day, or duck into the Visvesvaraya museum if it's raining. At 7:30 pm, have dinner at Church Street Social and finish with a drink at The 13th Floor. The math: breakfast, palace entry and autos about ₹500 + dinner and drinks about ₹3,500 = about ₹4,000 (approximate).

On Sunday, walk in Cubbon Park in the morning while its roads are closed to traffic, and have lunch near Church Street or in Indiranagar. In the evening, eat early in Koramangala 5th Block and get to Rosae about 15 minutes before the 7-10pm slot. If you've uploaded your ID and paid the balance online, you show the QR code and walk straight in. Pick your film, recline, and order a snack from the room's QR code if dinner wears off. The math: lunch about ₹1,000 + dinner about ₹1,000 + STELLAR ₹1,848 = about ₹3,850.

That puts the whole weekend at about ₹7,850 for two, and you can bring it down by swapping STELLAR for CINEPOD at ₹1,097.

Staying safe on a night out in Bangalore

Central Bangalore stays busy into the night, and a little planning helps. Choose places on main roads, keep your phone charged and agree on how you're getting home before the evening starts. Book autos and cabs through an app so the trip is tracked. Police run drink-driving checks on weekend nights, so leave the car at home if either of you plans to drink.
