Anniversary celebration ideas: at home, out in Bangalore, and by year

The anniversary lands on a Wednesday. You both work late, the Outer Ring Road does what it does, and by 9 PM the big plan has shrunk to scrolling a delivery app. The ideas below are for avoiding that: pick one that fits your story, prepare or book it a few days ahead, and keep the evening clear of work.

We run nine private theatre rooms in Koramangala, so anniversary planning is a regular part of our week. This list covers ideas at home, ideas out in Bangalore, suggestions by year, and options for any budget. Only one of them involves us.

Anniversary celebration ideas at home

Staying in makes sense when you have kids, a tight month, or a preference for quiet. These romantic anniversary ideas at home need a free evening and not much else.

1. Recreate your first date. Order the same food, wear something close to what you wore, and each tell the story from your side. You will remember different details, and that is half the fun.
2. Cook a dish neither of you has tried. Working side by side in the kitchen tends to stay in memory longer than a restaurant meal.
3. Watch your wedding video. Plenty of couples record one and never play it again. Put it on the biggest screen in the house and pause at the parts you had forgotten.
4. Write each other a one-page letter about the past year and the next one. Read them aloud, or seal them and open them on your next anniversary.
5. Print 10 to 20 photos from your years together, lay them out on the floor, and talk through each one.
6. Plan a home movie night with a film from the year you met. Our list of romantic movies to watch together sorts picks by mood.
7. Carry dinner out to the terrace or balcony with a few candles in holders. In monsoon months, check the forecast first.
8. Start a memory jar. Drop in small moments from the year on slips of paper and open it next year.
9. Plan next year's trip. Open a map, agree a budget, and choose the place together so the day ends with something to look forward to.

Going-out anniversary ideas in Bangalore

If you would rather leave the house, the places below are long-running and well known. Check current timings and prices before you go.

A rooftop dinner with a view

High Ultra Lounge is on the rooftop of the World Trade Center in Malleshwaram, looking over the city lights. It suits couples who like cocktails and a dressed-up evening. Cost: about Rs 5,000 and up for two (approximate). Reserve ahead on weekends.

A heritage restaurant dinner

Karavalli at Vivanta Residency Road has served coastal South Indian food since 1990, in a space modelled on a traditional Mangalorean home. Pick it if the food matters most to you both. Cost: roughly Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000 for two (approximate).

A garden lunch away from the centre

The Tamarind Tree on Kanakapura Road (JP Nagar 9th Phase) is an old family property set around a very old tamarind tree. These days it works mainly as a wedding and events venue, so call to check whether it is serving meals on your date.

A sunrise drive to Nandi Hills

Nandi Hills is about 60 km from the city, so leave around 4:30 AM to catch the sunrise. Entry is cheap and the main cost is fuel or a cab, about Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,000 for a return cab (approximate). Weekdays are far less crowded.

A play at Ranga Shankara

Ranga Shankara in JP Nagar stages plays most days of the week in Kannada, English, Hindi and other languages. Tickets usually start at a few hundred rupees, which makes it an easy change from a restaurant.

A pottery class together

Clay Station in HSR Layout has taught pottery since 2009. Two hours at the wheel side by side is a relaxed way to spend an afternoon, and you leave with a slightly lopsided souvenir.

A private screening of your wedding video or first film

This one sits between staying in and going out. At Rosae in Koramangala you book one of our rooms for a 3-hour slot and nobody else uses it during that time. Here is how the evening runs.

A few days before, book the slot online and pay the small advance. If you want to play your wedding video, call or WhatsApp +91 63617 29855 and tell the team; they will contact you and set it up. ID proof is required, so upload it on the website before you leave home (if you haven't, reception checks your ID at the venue and uploads a photo for you). Pay the balance at the venue by cash, card or UPI, or pay it online beforehand from your phone, where your booking shows the remaining amount. Arrive about 15 minutes early, show the QR code at the venue and walk in. If traffic holds you up, you can still check in any time within your booked three hours, though the slot ends at the booked time.

Inside, every room has access to the major OTT platforms, so you can watch anything on them, including the first film you saw together if it is streaming there. You are welcome to bring your own cake. Other outside food is not allowed, so for dinner you scan the QR code in the room, order from our menu, and the food comes to your theatre door. Alcohol is not allowed at Rosae. If the film runs long, you can extend when the next slot is free, for a small extra charge of about Rs 200-300 depending on the room.

Some rupee math, with prices per slot including GST as of 13 September 2026:

• A couple in DREAM (recliners) pays Rs 1,748. Add dinner for two at a Koramangala restaurant afterwards, about Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 (approximate), and the evening comes to roughly Rs 2,750 to Rs 3,250.
• A couple on a tighter budget can take CINEPOD at Rs 1,097. The priciest couple room, INFINITY, is Rs 2,997.
• Sharing the wedding video with family works in COSMOS, which seats up to eight. It is priced by headcount: Rs 1,648 for two plus Rs 250 per extra guest, so six people pay Rs 2,648 and eight pay Rs 3,148. Children under 5 don't count towards the headcount.

Anniversary ideas by year

1st anniversary

Tradition ties the first year to paper, so letters, a printed photo book or tickets to a play all fit. Keep the focus on looking back at a year of big changes.

5th anniversary

Five years is tied to wood. Couples often mark it by trying something new together, like a class, a weekend away, or a visit to the place they married.

10th anniversary

By ten years there are usually kids, careers and very little time alone, so a kid-free day matters more than the plan itself. A staycation in the city, a Sunday trip to Mysuru to see the palace lit up in the evening, or a long dinner all work. Some couples renew their vows with a few close friends.

25th anniversary

Silver anniversaries often turn into family occasions organised by the children. A family lunch, the old wedding video on a big screen with everyone watching, or a trip back to where the couple married are all good choices. Ask the couple what they would enjoy before planning a surprise around them.

Anniversary ideas for couples with kids

With children, the hard part is time alone:

• Split the day. Have a family breakfast with the kids, then leave them with grandparents or a trusted sitter for the evening.
• Go out while they are at school. A weekday lunch is quieter and easier to arrange than a Saturday night.
• Let the kids help cook dinner or make a card, then watch your wedding video after they are in bed.
• Keep the plan to about three hours. A play or a film fits around bedtime more easily than a full day out.

Budget anniversary ideas

Costs below are approximate.

• Free: a morning walk in Lalbagh or Cubbon Park, a home-cooked dinner, letters to each other, a memory jar.
• Under Rs 1,000: a play at Ranga Shankara, a show at the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, a picnic with food from your favourite bakery.
• Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000: a private theatre room for two, a pottery class, lunch at a neighbourhood restaurant.
• Rs 3,000 and up: a rooftop or fine-dining dinner, a Nandi Hills or Mysuru day trip by cab, a hotel staycation.
